New Steps

What do you do when an 82-year-old lady purchases the materials for new steps, but cannot find someone to build them for her?

You build them, of course.

Need assistance paying for eyeglasses?

The Aiken Lions Club places top priority on assisting needy individuals with sight problems. We work with ACTS (Area Churches Together Serving) to identify qualified individuals and to assist them with their sight problems. We help cover some of the cost associated with doctor examinations and eyeglasses. If you feel that you might qualify for assistance, refer to the process section below for additional information. You must be an Aiken resident. Residents outside of Aiken should call 1-866-325-4667 for possible assistance from other SC Lions Clubs.

The Process

  1. Contact ACTS through one of the following methods:
    • Visit them at their facility at 340 Park St, Aiken SC orACTS Office
    • Call them at 803-642-5919 or
    • Fill out an on-line form at actsofaiken.org/contact_us
  2. Complete the financial aid form provided by ACTS.
  3. If ACTS determines that you are qualified, they will notify our club, and a club member will get in touch with you.
  4. Our club member will inform you of the amount of financial aid the club will be providing and the cost to you (if any). If you elect to go forward, the club member will work out a schedule with you for doctor examinations and fitting of eyeglasses.

Knights of the Blind

The Lions Club International  became known as the “Knights of the Blind” due to its strong commitment to vision-related causes. This designation was largely influenced by Helen Keller, who, in 1925, addressed the Lions Club at their international convention. She challenged the members to become “knights of the blind” and to engage actively in combating blindness and providing support to those with visual impairments.

Following her call to action, the Lions Club adopted sight conservation as a primary focus, leading to various initiatives, including vision screening programs, funding for eye surgeries, and supporting research on blindness. This mission solidified their identity as champions for the visually impaired and reinforced their long-standing dedication to humanitarian service.
